The latest version of the Volvo S60 Polestar is now available in South Africa in a limited run of just 45 units. Updated for the 2017 model year, the quickest road-going Volvo ever now sports a completely new drivetrain for enhanced performance and efficiency. Following in the footsteps of the original 3.0-litre version, of which only 28 were ever imported into South Africa, the new S60 Polestar acts as a halo model in the Volvo range.

Engineered by Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance arm, the new S60 Polestar shares even more of its DNA with the company’s racing cars. The new 2.0-litre Drive-E turbocharged and supercharged petrol engine has been developed alongside a 1.6-litre version of the same engine which currently powers the Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 racing cars, which are piloted by Thed Björk and Robert Dahlgren in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). Furthermore, the S60 polestar also shares its base chassis and engineering philosophy with the racing version.

Thed Björk elaborates: “While used in vastly different areas, these cars share more than just technology. The core philosophy is the same, developed by people with the same passion. It is about creating performance that can be used in all situations, no matter whether it’s about winning a championship or being able to enjoy a safe, functional and fun-to-drive car all year round.”

With 270 kW at 6 000 rpm and 470 Nm of torque available between 3 100 and 5 000 rpm, the Volvo S60 Polestar’s performance has been improved and remains impressive – 0-100 km/h is now achieved in just 4.7 seconds and top speed remains electronically limited to 250 km/h. A vast increase in responsiveness has been achieved by the fitment of a new 8-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox which has been performance-optimised. A BorgWarner all-wheel drive system manages power output to all four wheels.

Extra responsiveness can be easily unleashed, along with more volume from the sonorous twin-exit exhausts, by selecting the Sport driving mode. Coupled to launch control, which unleashes the car’s full potential with rapid acceleration and punchier gear changes, the new S60 Polestar easily exploits its new Drive-E power.

The performance and output gains have been achieved thanks to a bigger turbo, new conrods, new camshafts, a larger intake and a higher-capacity fuel pump, compared to the same engine in a standard S60 T6 AWD.

Naturally, an improvement in efficiency is most notable with the switch to a Drive-E powertrain. Average fuel economy on the combined cycle has been reduced to 7.8-litres per 100 km, and carbon emissions have come down to 179 g/km – a significant reduction of 22.5 per cent.

On top of this new performance-optimised equipment, Polestar has also reduced the car’s weight. The Volvo S60 Polestar is now 24 kg lighter over the front axle and 20 kg lighter in total compared to the previous model. Other new features on the car include new 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels, Polestar-calibrated electro-assisted power steering and new slotted front brake discs, measuring 371 mm in diameter.

Brake callipers are by Polestar/Brembo and feature six pistons up front and four at the rear, and the suspension continues to feature adjustable Öhlins dampers for the track enthusiast who really wants to get into finer detail with their car.

“This car is properly quick,” says Niels Möller, Chief Operating Officer at Polestar. “But it’s more than that. It combines Polestar’s 20 years of racing pedigree with Volvo’s inherent pragmatism and engineering heritage. This is a very fast car that you can use every day of the year.”

Most impressive however, is that the new S60 Polestar, as with the original version, is available with all available options fitted as standard.

Standard features include:

-new 20-inch Polestar alloy wheels

-automatic bi-xenon headlights with Active Bending and Active High Beam (including anti-dazzle for other road users, a feature usually restricted to LED headlights)

-auto-dimming mirrors inside and out-

-front and rear parking sensors with a rear-view camera

-CleanZone automatic dual-zone climate control with rear seat ventilation and remote pre-conditioning

-an 8-speaker Harman/Kardon multi-media infotainment system with USB, Bluetooth and Internet compatibility, and voice control

-satellite navigation

-a heated leather/alcantara steering wheel

-leather/alcantara upholstery with heated front and rear]-cyan contrast stitching

-a genuine carbon fibre ‘floating centre stack’

-an active TFT digital instrument cluster

-gear shift paddles

-a sunroof

-keyless access and starting

-an active twin-pipe Polestar exhaust system

-Adaptive Cruise Control with a toggle switch to cruise control

Naturally, this Volvo also features a complete arsenal of safety equipment as standard, including six airbags, ABS, EBA, BAS, HAS, ESC and IntelliSafe, which besides City Safety (AEB) includes the likes of Lane Departure Warning, Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Alert, Road Sign Information and a Driver Alert system.

Henrik Fries, Vice President R&D at Polestar, concludes: “All changes made to the car are about improving drivability and efficiency. The base of the new engine carries motorsport technology with solutions like the combination of turbo and supercharger, lightweight materials and more. This works hand-in-hand with our core philosophy and has enabled us to evolve the Volvo S60 Polestar.”

Volvo Cars has unveiled the eagerly-awaited V90 Cross Country, completing its 90 Series line-up.

Since the introduction of the first Cross Country almost 20 years ago, Volvo Cars has become synonymous with the rugged all-road, all-weather product category, with a growing stable of Cross Country models.

Volvo Cars’ Cross Country models fulfil an increasingly important part of the Swedish automaker’s product portfolio as luxury car buyers seek out a more experienced-based lifestyle that occasionally takes them off the beaten track.

“The new V90 Cross Country takes the elegance of the V90 and transforms it into an all-road car that delivers safety, comfort and performance in a capable and adventurous package,” says Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car Group.

With some of the harshest winters on the planet and over 77 per cent of the country covered in forest and lakes, Sweden is the perfect place to develop and test extreme durability and all-weather capable cars. This hard-won expertise represents a large part of Volvo Cars’ heritage, reflected in the company’s Cross Country model line-up.

“Our cars are well known for their safety, strength and durability. With all-wheel drive, increased ride height, and a chassis optimised for comfort and control in all weather and road conditions, the new V90 Cross Country takes our versatile V90 estate and adds the heart of an explorer,” says Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Cars.

With Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture providing the underpinnings, the V90 Cross Country has undergone rigorous testing to ensure that it can survive the extremes in which it will ultimately find itself.

From secret testing facilities in the frozen north of Sweden, where temperatures regularly hit -40 degrees centigrade, to the searing desert heat of Arizona, where Volvo Cars performs its high temperature testing programme, the V90 Cross Country has been built to last.

With a design that clearly stands out from the crowd, the V90 Cross Country’s rugged character belies a sumptuous interior that delivers a level of luxury uncommon in the segment, combining all the benefits of the connectivity and entertainment features that were launched with the new S90 and V90, including a high-end sound system by Bowers & Wilkins.

The V90 Cross Country’s exterior design cues communicate the powerful and dynamic capability that the car exemplifies, while offering the flexibility to choose from both rugged and elegant expressions.

“Designing a Volvo Cross Country is not a styling exercise, a plastic job. It is based on honest capability. The Volvo V90 Cross Country brings a surprising and intriguing combination of a strong, powerful exterior and a luxurious, Scandinavian interior. It will continue the genuine tradition of the Volvo Cross Country with a new recipe: the blend of powerful off-road capability in a most elegant, sophisticated, tailored wagon suit,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars.

The new V90 Cross Country takes this well-established segment to a new level of comfort-inspired capability. Production of the car is set to start during the northern hemisphere autumn at Volvo Cars’ Torslanda Plant in Sweden.

The new Volvo V90 Cross Country is destined for Southern African roads, with timing and availability currently in planning.

V40 receives cosmetic and trim changes for model year 2017; now featuring Thor’s Hammer.

Complete Drive-E engine line-up maintains exceptional efficiency across the range.

South African release scheduled for Q3 2016.

The best-selling Volvo V40 range is being updated with the new face of Volvo for the 2017 model year, with cosmetic and trim updates for all V40 and V40 Cross Country derivatives. The range will continue to include three diesel and three petrol engines, as well as four trim levels which are still highlighted by sporty R-Design derivatives.

    Now featuring Thor’s Hammer

First introduced on the all-new XC90 and subsequently the new S90 and V90, Thor’s Hammer is now available as Volvo’s light signature on the new V40 and V40 Cross Country – in conjunction with full-LED Active Bending headlight technology. New grille designs and the all-new Volvo Iron Mark also dominate the front of this striking premium C-segment compact hatch.

“The V40 is the best-selling Volvo model in Europe and the second-most popular Volvo model globally, making it a very important car for the company. With the updates for model year 2017 we make this already very successful model even more attractive to customers in the segment,” says Björn Annwall, Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Customer Service at Volvo Car Group.

The exterior update includes the addition of five colours to Volvo’s V40 offer including the completely new Amazon Blue and Denim Blue, as well as three colours already used by other models in the Volvo Cars portfolio: Bursting Blue, Mussel Blue and Luminous Sand.

The V40 will also receive the new trim level nomenclature, such as Momentum and Inscription that were first introduced on the XC90, visualising trim levels and variants and a total of eight new wheels across the V40 and V40 Cross Country ranges.

In a cue taken from the award-winning Volvo Concept Estate, a new upholstery called City Weave will be added along with a new Charcoal/Blond steering wheel option. Several new interior panel trims are also to be offered: Milled Aluminium, Black Grid Aluminium and Stealth Aluminium. Accent trim colours in the door inserts will now be offered with contrasting stitching and for the first time a black headliner will be available as an option on all models in the V40 range. New tread plates will be added for the R-Design and Inscription trim levels and an updated key fob with the new Volvo logo will be available.

Continuing its innovative approach to powertrain engineering, Volvo has reduced CO2 emissions on its popular D2 manual powertrain to just 89 g/km with the introduction of low rolling resistance tyres.

    Volvo On Call

The Volvo On Call smartphone app which allows remote access and control over a wide range of in-car features, receives a substantial update. Volvo On Call, which is still under development and planning for South African release, already delivers wearable connectivity (Apple Watch/Android Wear) and now Microsoft Band 2 connectivity, enabling voice-control for certain features when using Windows 10-based smartphones. New functionality includes calendar and navigation integration, as well as PC-based operation.

    CleanZone technology

Volvo’s continuing leadership in interior air quality is highlighted across the 40 Series from 2016 with the inclusion of the CleanZone logo on instrument panel air vents. Volvo’s award-winning CleanZone technology ensures that outside air is effectively filtered before entering the cabin, removing harmful pollutants that are increasingly common in large urban areas. CleanZone technology reflects Volvo’s ongoing work to improve the in-car experience, covering incoming air, interior emissions and odours, interior surfaces and contact allergies.

The refreshing new Volvo V40 and V40 Cross Country range arrives in South Africa in the third quarter of 2016.
